Mother Honors Daughter’s Memory With Rave-Themed Funeral on Her 12th Birthday

When Samantha Curley promised her daughter a birthday rave, she never imagined it would double as a funeral.

The funeral of Olivia Curley, an 11-year-old Scottish schoolgirl who died in what authorities suspect may have been a drug-related tragedy, will take place December 12th on what would have been her 12th birthday. The girl died November 17th at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children after falling ill three days earlier, and police are reportedly investigating her death as “unexplained” with concerns that she may have been given ecstasy.

Her mother Samantha has announced that rather than holding a traditional wake, the family would celebrate Olivia’s life with a rave-inspired birthday party featuring a DJ at Mackintosh’s Bar in Dalmuir, following a morning service at a nearby crematorium.

“It’s not a traditional wake because it was my angel’s 12th birthday and everyone who knew Liv knew she was a raver,” Samantha wrote on Facebook. “I promised her a birthday party so we have a DJ coming along too help give her the best send off we can.”

Olivia’s case is believed to be potentially the youngest suspected drug-related death ever recorded in Scotland, according to The Scottish Sun, raising urgent questions about how a child so young could have accessed illegal substances. Jackie Baillie, the Scottish Labour health spokesperson and local member of the Scottish Parliament, called the tragedy “utterly heartbreaking.”

“It is important that we get answers on what caused this death in order to ensure this unthinkable tragedy cannot be repeated,” Baillie said.

A GoFundMe established for Olivia Curley has raised more than £5,000 to support the bereaved family. Any remaining funds will benefit Olivia’s little sister, Charlotte, according to the fundraising campaign.

“At a time when no family should ever have to face such pain, we are coming together to ask for support in giving Olivia the beautiful farewell she deserves,” reads the GoFundMe. “Any contribution, no matter how small will help ease the financial burden on her family as they navigate this heartbreaking time.”
