Skrillex and Diplo Made a Second Jack Ü Album That May Never Be Released

Diplo has revealed that Jack Ü, his defunct project with Skrillex, recorded a complete second album prior to the duo’s split, citing a broken dynamic and personal animosity that ultimately ended the partnership.

Speaking on Nayeema Raza’s podcast Smart Girl Dumb Questions, the producer said that the unreleased album features collaborations with Charli xcx and Florence + The Machine, among others. “We did a whole second album. We recorded so many weird records,” Diplo said, though he acknowledged the material “probably feels dated now.”

Jack Ü’s creative chemistry was undeniable, according to Diplo. “We were really a good combo because I have real wild, out-of-pocket ideas for pop music and he just is—nobody’s better than him at creating sound that just sounds like ‘what the fuck.'”

However, Diplo also made a startling claim about the current state of their relationship.

“Skrillex hates me… it’s a real kind of crazy hate that I just can’t understand,” he said. “I don’t really know what is the real issue but we tried out some mediation—I tried, there’s none on his side. But I just love the guy, you know. We were like brothers.”

Jack Ü formed in 2013 before releasing their debut album in 2015, Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü, ultimately winning the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The record featured the chart-topping Justin Bieber collaboration “Where Are Ü Now,” which won in the category of Best Dance Recording, as well as fan-favorite tracks “Take Ü There” (with Kiesza) and “To Ü” (with AlunaGeorge).

The collaborative project became a festival mainstay before quietly dissolving, however, leaving fans hoping for a reunion that now seems increasingly unlikely.

“Maybe there’s a dynamic that didn’t work, and it just was broken,” Diplo said.
