Sub Focus and Grimes have joined forces for a new single, “Entwined,” an adrenaline-fueled drum & bass track
Out now via Casablanca Records, it’s the latest single from Sub Focus’ hotly anticipated concept album Contact, inspired by humanity’s shifting place in the cosmos. Lifting off with Grimes’ sugar-coated, otherworldly vocals, the track opens in a dreamlike haze before accelerating into a rush of shimmering synths.
Grimes’ voice melts into Sub Focus’ sleek and propulsive production, leading to a powerhouse collaboration that delivers on months of hype.
“I literally could not be more hyped on Sub Focus,” she wrote on X in July. “Dance music has felt bizarrely sterile and increasingly so over time. Working on some stuff for his record and it’s literally hitting like the autistic sci fi shit in all the right places like it rly feels like cinematic, like I’m right in Neuromancer. But also it’s genuinely euphoric. It has been so long since I’ve felt euphoric about dance music.
“Entwined” feels kinetic and alive, punctuated by sharp, metallic details that give it a sci-fi sheen. Meanwhile, Grimes does what she does best, threading lyrical themes of obsession and cosmic spirituality: “I could cross the desert, cross the seven seas / I would climb the mountains to feel your gravity / I would travel light years, stars and galaxies / All so I could find you in the energy.”
By the end, the track twists into something darker, closing with an industrial coda that feels like the lights just flicked on inside a spaceship. It’s a cinematic masterstroke and one that further positions Contact as one of the year’s biggest dance albums. The album is due out November 21st.
