Tiësto is set to perform at the Great Pyramids of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World, this winter, headlining a concert at the site on December 19th.
Presented by P+US, the event continues a streak of high-profile electronic performances at the Egyptian landmark following Anyma’s October 10th headline and past appearances from Carl Cox and Keinemusik, among others. The event also falls within a wave of winter programming that includes a headlining performance from South African house music icon Black Coffee, who is also slated to perform there in December.
Tiësto was previously set to DJ within the ancient pyramid complex in 2023 at the Cairo edition of Kygo’s Palm Tree Festival, but the offshoot was ultimately cancelled.
The announcement comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by a local rights group, the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights, to halt large-scale raves and music festivals at the Great Pyramids. Filed on behalf of Egyptologist Monica Hanna and others, the complaint alleges that high-powered sound systems and laser rigs threaten the foundation of the 4,500-year-old structures, as previously reported by EDM.com.
While the suit remains ongoing, Tiësto’s performance is still set to move forward, drawing attention to both the event and the wider debate over how large-scale concerts intersect with the preservation of cultural heritage sites.
