“Trail Sonified” wasn’t your typical club night. Staged in an industrial parking lot on the fringe of England’s Lake District, the one-off event from outdoor apparel brand Merrell offered a first-of-its-kind experience with a club night powered entirely by trail-running data.
Runners across the UK slipped on Merrell’s MTL Adapt trail shoes, which fed in real-time metrics, everything from elevation gain and cadence to heart rate and distance covered. Translated through a process known as data sonification, the metrics were molded into an original soundtrack and the resulting output was as varied as the terrain.
Helmed by DJ and visual artist Advanced Rock, the energetic set was a genre-spanning interpretation of movement itself. The sweaty, euphoric and highly participatory initiative felt like a direct answer to some of the existential questions currently facing British nightlife. Where once mega clubs dominated and weekend raving was a national rite, today’s club scene is fragmented and in a state of real-time reinvention.
A slew of venue closures and shifting consumer behavior have been recent headwinds, but within that flux, new possibilities are emerging. Clubbing, once siloed as an escape from the rest of daily life, is increasingly colliding with other spheres from wellness to climate activism and outdoor culture to shape the experience.
“Trail Sonified was a manifestation of what happens when movement and music intersect,” said Simon Sweeney, Marketing Manager at Merrell. “The energy in the room proved just how connected we are to the environments we move through, and how those environments can inspire the culture we create.”
