ZHU and BadWolf Drop Hypnotic House Track, “Smoke Up In The Air”

House music gets hazier with “Smoke Up In The Air,” the latest single from ZHU. The collaboration pairs ZHU’s signature shadowy croon with the production prowess of BadWolf, a fast-rising electronic music producer out of Mexico. ZHU has spent years perfecting this aesthetic of hypnotic, after-hours house music, and BadWolf proves a natural collaborator. The smoldering vocals that turned “Faded” into a global dance hit return with the same slink, floating atop a pulsing house beat. Where previous ZHU productions have flirted with darkness, “Smoke Up In The Air” fully commits to the vapor, delivering a track that sounds exactly like its name suggests. The title becomes literal, evoking that same weightless, suspended feeling of losing yourself and finding something unexpected on the dancefloor. Fred again.. and KETTAMA’s “HARDSTYLE 2” Isn’t What You Think It Is

Fred again.. and KETTAMA have reunited for “HARDSTYLE 2,” a new collaboration with Australian hip-hop and alt-punk band Shady Nasty that leans into darker experimental territory. Out now, the restless track finds the duo back in sync after July’s “Air Maxes,” pushing their sound into moodier depths. Despite the tongue-in-cheek lyric, “Hardstyle my style hostile,” this isn’t a hardstyle track. It’s a jungly blend of drum & bass and breakbeat with a touch of angst, anchored by distorted textures and a gritty vocal performance. As the arrangement unfolds, it erupts in a burst of pent-up energy courtesy of Fred and KETTAMA’s frenetic drum programming. “HARDSTYLE 2,” which debuted during a Twitch livestream months ahead of Fred’s current 10-city pop-up tour, continues the rollout for his upcoming USB002 project, due out in December. It follows a streak of collaborations with the likes of Amyl and the Sniffers and two with Skepta, arriving shortly after his surprise DJ set alongside Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, a historic crossover moment in itself. Wicked Oaks Festival Organizers Break Silence After Storm-Riddled Debut

Nearly a week after Wicked Oaks made its debut in Austin, the festival’s organizers are confronting the aftermath of an event plagued by severe weather and a tragic post-festival accident. In a statement released Thursday, Disco Presents sought to clarify circulating rumors, lay out their safety response and outline steps being taken for refunds and reimbursements. Held October 25-26 at the Carson Creek Ranch outside Austin, Wicked Oaks united several of Disco’s flagship event brands into one EDM festival. The lineup, featuring marquee names from Martin Garrix to Flux Pavilion, promised a massive debut for what was slated to become a new Halloween tradition in the live music capital. But an onslaught of severe weather throughout the weekend left thousands of attendees navigating delayed entry, muddy campgrounds and a site-wide evacuation on Saturday night. By Sunday, however, Wicked Oaks managed to bounce back as Disco organized last-minute shuttle service from Circuit of the Americas, compensating for unusable parking lots. Improved conditions also allowed the event to proceed as planned. The company’s statement also acknowledged the death of an attendee, Anthony Pike, following an offsite vehicular accident in Bastrop, Texas as fans were traveling home from the festival. A friend of the victim launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the medical bills of a severely injured passenger in the wake of the collision, which she claims was caused by a drunk driver. “It is our current understanding that a truck ran a red light and caused the wreck,” the statement reads. With the family’s permission, we can share that the individual who passed away was Anthony Pike. Details of Anthony’s Celebration of Life event in Dallas will be shared soon. Our community is small, and losses like this are felt deeply. We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy and extend our heartfelt condolences to Anthony’s family, friends, and all who are affected.” “Austin-Travis County EMS has advised they are not aware of any deaths or critical patients among those transported from the festival,” Disco added, noting that a total of seven individuals were transported to hospitals over the weekend, with EMS and licensed medical teams stationed onsite throughout. The company laid out a detailed refund and reimbursement plan, including full refunds for Saturday single-day ticket-holders and 50% refunds for weekend ticket-holders and certain parking passes. Guests impacted by the disrupted Friday camping schedule were also offered a path to recoup hotel costs. While organizers said they are working across multiple ticketing platforms, some of which involve payment plans, they emphasized a commitment to resolving the process quickly. You can read the full statement below and find more information on the Wicked Oaks website. OpenAI Is Developing a Generative Music Model: Report

The AI arms race has a new soundtrack, and OpenAI wants to be the one writing it. OpenAI is developing a generative music tool capable of composing music from text or audio prompts, according to reporting by The Information. Though the company has not yet formally announced the tool or confirmed its release strategy, sources say the initiative marks a significant pivot toward creative audio applications for the $500 billion tech giant. The company is reportedly collaborating with students from New York’s prestigious Juilliard School for musicians, tasking them with annotating sheet music to help refine the model’s training data. While sparse on specifics, the project hints at a broader ambition to merge professional-level musicality with machine learning. The endeavor places OpenAI in the crosshairs of a rapidly evolving and increasingly contentious space. Google has been testing the waters with its MusicLM model while Meta earlier this year released open-source tools for music generation under the Audiocraft moniker. But perhaps the most visible (and controversial) is Suno, a platform that allows users to create full songs from simple text prompts. OpenAI itself is no stranger to generative music. The company in 2020 released Jukebox, a neural net capable of creating raw audio music complete with vocals. While experimental and ultimately discontinued, Jukebox foreshadowed the deeper AI-audio ambitions now taking shape under CEO Sam Altman. Still, with great scale comes scrutiny. OpenAI has already been entangled in a web of copyright litigation, including lawsuits over alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted content for training language models. The company has inked some licensing deals, most notably with Shutterstock, which includes access to its music catalog, but the lack of clear details around how OpenAI is sourcing audio data for training its music tool is likely to raise familiar legal challenges. Sub Focus and Grimes Bend Space and Time in New Single, “Entwined”

Sub Focus and Grimes have joined forces for a new single, “Entwined,” an adrenaline-fueled drum & bass track Out now via Casablanca Records, it’s the latest single from Sub Focus’ hotly anticipated concept album Contact, inspired by humanity’s shifting place in the cosmos. Lifting off with Grimes’ sugar-coated, otherworldly vocals, the track opens in a dreamlike haze before accelerating into a rush of shimmering synths. Grimes’ voice melts into Sub Focus’ sleek and propulsive production, leading to a powerhouse collaboration that delivers on months of hype. “I literally could not be more hyped on Sub Focus,” she wrote on X in July. “Dance music has felt bizarrely sterile and increasingly so over time. Working on some stuff for his record and it’s literally hitting like the autistic sci fi shit in all the right places like it rly feels like cinematic, like I’m right in Neuromancer. But also it’s genuinely euphoric. It has been so long since I’ve felt euphoric about dance music. “Entwined” feels kinetic and alive, punctuated by sharp, metallic details that give it a sci-fi sheen. Meanwhile, Grimes does what she does best, threading lyrical themes of obsession and cosmic spirituality: “I could cross the desert, cross the seven seas / I would climb the mountains to feel your gravity / I would travel light years, stars and galaxies / All so I could find you in the energy.” By the end, the track twists into something darker, closing with an industrial coda that feels like the lights just flicked on inside a spaceship. It’s a cinematic masterstroke and one that further positions Contact as one of the year’s biggest dance albums. The album is due out November 21st. You can listen to “Entwined” below and find the new single on streaming platforms here. “Streaming Alone Isn’t Enough”: SoundCloud Execs on New Model Eliminating Platform Revenue Cuts

SoundCloud has long occupied an awkward middle ground in music tech: too indie to compete with Spotify’s scale, too established to play the scrappy upstart. But their new subscription model could change that for good. The company is launching a revamped “All-in-One” artist subscription that eliminates its distribution revenue shares entirely and adds direct fan support with no platform cut, making a major play to become the one-stop shop for independent musicians. Starting at the end of November 2025, SoundCloud will pass through 100% of distribution royalties to artists subscribing to its Artist and Artist Pro tiers, which means they keep everything they earn from placements on Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, YouTube Music and over 50 other streaming platforms. The move puts the platform in direct competition with services like DistroKid and TuneCore, which have long dominated the space despite copyright lawsuits and persistent backlash from artists concerning their distribution models. SoundCloud is also launching a Fan Support feature that lets listeners tip artists directly through their profiles, and the company takes zero commission. The new model will additionally offer merchandising and vinyl-on-demand options, enabling artists to sell physical products without inventory headaches or upfront costs. Whether it rallies creators back to SoundCloud en masse remains to be seen. The platform has stumbled before, most notoriously with its fallible copyright infrastructure and a user-centric royalty model that never quite materialized. But if the company can deliver on this promise, it might finally answer the question with which it’s been wrestling for years: what does SoundCloud want to be when it grows up? The answer is a Swiss Army knife for artists who refuse to get carved up by today’s tortuous music industry. Why juggle multiple platforms when you can upload, distribute and monetize all from the same place you’ve been building your fanbase? Back in 2007, SoundCloud’s original founders were just trying to help artists share demos with fans. Today’s CEO, Eliah Seton, says their prevailing mission still drives the company. “SoundCloud’s founding purpose is to empower artists and fans to share and connect through music, and that same idea, today, is driving the next generation of the music industry,” Seton tells EDM.com. “The founding purpose is up on our office walls because it’s more the center of gravity in music than ever before.” “We know the future of music will live on global scaled platforms that connect artists and fans directly. That’s SoundCloud,” he continues. “That’s what the founders built, and it’s more true today than ever. The market has come to us.” We also caught up with Steve Shirley, VP of Product Management for SoundCloud’s Creator arm, to discuss the implications of the platform’s new “All-in-One” artist subscription. EDM.com: What was the moment you realized SoundCloud needed to make this specific move? Was there a particular artist conversation, piece of data or some kind of epiphany? Steve Shirley: There wasn’t one singular moment. This comes as the broader music and creator economy shifts—artists demanding greater control, fans seeking deeper connection, and platforms under pressure to prove real value beyond streaming. SoundCloud sits at the intersection of all three. The upcoming launch isn’t just a milestone for the company; it’s a timely story that reflects a larger inflection point in how artists build sustainable careers and how platforms evolve to support them. The core message is simple but urgent: streaming alone isn’t enough. SoundCloud is uniquely positioned to fix that by creating new, fan-driven revenue models. Building on Fan-Powered Royalties, the first system tying royalties to real listener engagement, the company is now expanding beyond the traditional royalty pie into new ways for artists to earn directly from fans: 100% distribution royalties, merch, vinyl and exclusive content. EDM.com: You’re eliminating distribution revenue share entirely while competitors like DistroKid, TuneCore and CD Baby charge either flat fees or take cuts. How does SoundCloud convince its investors and stakeholders that giving away what others charge premium prices for is actually a superior long-term business model and not just charitable positioning? Steve Shirley: Our business model is rooted in growth—the more artists we help succeed, the stronger our platform becomes. When artists earn more and engage more deeply, it drives both retention and discovery across the platform. That growth benefits artists, fans and ultimately SoundCloud’s business. EDM.com: This announcement is all about monetization infrastructure, but SoundCloud’s original unique selling proposition was being where new sounds broke first. Has the platform conceded the discovery game to TikTok and Spotify’s algorithmic playlists? What’s your strategy for making artists discoverable once they’ve opted into this new subscription? Steve Shirley: Not at all. By fueling creators, we fuel fandom. Fans discover and connect more deeply; creators convert that energy into growth and revenue. SoundCloud is the engine that makes it happen. It’s this full-circle ecosystem where direct artist-fan connection turns deeper discovery into growth and revenue that makes SoundCloud so unique. From our earliest days, SoundCloud has been the place to leave real-time feedback, DM your favorite artist and connect with fans who love the same music you do. That social spirit has always set us apart, and it’s still central to how you experience SoundCloud. Just earlier this month, SoundCloud rolled out a new wave of Social Discovery features to ensure that experience is front and center. Fans can see what friends and artists love, uncover what’s trending in their scene and find their next obsession (and their friend group’s next obsession) faster than ever. EDM.com: On-demand vinyl is an interesting offering. Meanwhile, TikTok is fragmenting songs into 15-second clips, AI is generating infinite variations and spatial audio is creating format wars. How does vinyl fit into SoundCloud’s vision for the future of music consumption, or is this just tactical feature parity with Bandcamp? Steve Shirley: We believe the future of music is fandom, and being able to monetize that fandom is essential. On-Demand Vinyl via our elasticStage partnership enables artists to sell vinyl globally with no upfront cost, risk, or minimum orders, giving fans direct ways to support artists and show off their fandom. For decades, vinyl has been a tangible way for fans to support artists they love, yet for most independent artists, producing vinyl has been financially and logistically out of reach. Now, fans can purchase physical music instantl and artists start earning from the first sale. We’re committed to providing artists with new opportunities for connection and monetization and ensuring that every artist—no matter where they are in their career—has the tools to build a sustainable career. EDM.com: The top 1% of artists capture the vast majority of streaming revenue, but your new model seems to assume a thriving creator middle class. What evidence do you have that this cohort exists at scale, and that they’ll choose SoundCloud over established alternatives? Steve Shirley: We see that cohort every day on SoundCloud. Thousands of independent artists are building sustainable, fan-driven careers without major label backing. This launch gives them even more tools: 100% distribution royalties, direct fan support, merch and vinyl to turn creative momentum into income. EDM.com: You’re positioning this as an “all-in-one” solution but artists still need email marketing tools, social media scheduling, copyright protection, sync licensing connections and a lot more. Does SoundCloud have plans to expand this subscription? Steve Shirley: Yes. SoundCloud was built to help artists share their music, grow their careers and get rewarded for their work, and that remains our guiding principle. The All-in-One subscription is a major step in making the core experience—distribution, monetization and fan connection—fully seamless. From here, we’ll continue to evolve thoughtfully, adding tools and partnerships that deliver real impact for artists. Alden Song and 20XII Serve Up Dancefloor Dopamine With New Single, “Spin”

Alden Song and 20XII have teamed up for “Spin,” a track that understands house music’s primary objective: keep people moving. Song has been quietly stacking his collaborative deck, and this latest team-up with Atlanta-born singer-songwriter 20XII might be his strongest hand yet. Out now across all streaming platforms, “Spin” is the kind of track that doesn’t ask politely, instead grabbing you by the hips and coaxing you onto the dancefloor. The New York-to-LA transplant produces a pulsing bassline and crisp percussion that snaps like fresh bills, showcasing his knack for marrying underground grit with unabashed party energy. Meanwhile, 20XII’s unapologetic vocals ride atop infectious leads while rapturous risers build the tension without cluttering the groove. “It’s for anyone who needs to feel alive and unstoppable on the dancefloor,” 20XII says, which is either a mission statement or a doctor’s prescription, depending on how your week’s going. For Song, “Spin” marks another step in a creative trajectory that’s been gaining momentum without sacrificing substance. Lane 8 and Jyll Reunite for Anjunadeep Track, “Stay Still, A Little While”

Lane 8 has returned to Above & Beyond’s Anjunadeep with “Stay Still, A Little While,” an uplifting collaboration with German singer-songwriter Jyll. The producer’s first single since the release of 2024’s Childish album, the track first surfaced during his last Red Rocks performance before appearing in his Fall 2025 Mixtape, quickly catching the attention of fans and sparking speculation about an official release. In an Instagram post announcing the track, Lane 8 revealed it began with a rough piano sketch he recorded “mistakes and all” before sending it to Jyll, who previously joined him on the fan-favorite “I Will Leave a Light On.” “I wasn’t really prepared for what she sent back,” he wrote. “It’s an incredible performance and piece of writing.” Opening in a haze of soft chords, the track builds slowly, suspended in a meditative yet uplifting calm that recalls the sound of Brightest Lights. Crisp percussion and glowing synth textures guide the arrangement into motion, shaping a sound that feels both grounded and dreamlike. Jyll’s powerful voice beautifully carries the song’s conviction like someone choking back emotion just enough to stay composed: “I’m not scared of the ocean wide / I stay still a little while / ’cause in the end I own the night.” Drawn from the track’s title, that lyrics captures its core message about losing yourself in constant motion and finding strength in chosen stillness. Riot Games has tapped electronic music superstar Anyma to co-direct the opening ceremony for the esports tournament League of Legends Worlds 2025. The November 9th event in Chengdu will feature the multidisciplinary performer alongside Chinese pop star G.E.M., who recorded this year’s Worlds anthem “Sacrifice.” Anyma, known for his groundbreaking Vegas Sphere residency, will handle creative direction for the ceremony’s third act while also joining G.E.M. on stage for “a special live performance” of the track, according to a press release. “I’ve been an avid gamer all my life, so headlining Worlds 2025 is a real honor,” Anyma said. “Riot Games’ consistent storytelling on such a large scale feels truly limitless. “League of Legends has created universes that inspire millions, and I’m thrilled to bring my sound and touch into their world to push the boundaries of what’s possible through such an impactful medium.” Maria Egan, Riot’s Global Head of Music & Events, framed the partnership as pushing “new boundaries” for the company’s stage production by connecting League of Legends IP with Anyma’s visual style. Fourvenues, Nightlife Operating System Behind Pacha and Other Top Clubs, Launches In the US

The team behind Fourvenues used to work in nightclubs before they started building software for them. That wealth of experience has led the surging Spanish startup to officially make its debut stateside, where they’re opening offices in Miami and New York. With its cutting-edge technology for the nightlife industry, the company is betting that American nightclubs are ready for the same kind of operational overhaul that turned it into the leading backend infrastructure for some of Europe’s biggest venues. Fourvenues operates in more than 20 countries and already works with a slew of storied electronic music clubs and brands including Pacha, Zamna and Cova Santa. It runs the full sales operation for Pacha Group and built the nightlife titan’s ambitious, custom VIP booking experience that recently went live. The company, which launched in 2018, has spent the past seven years building the most comprehensive all-in-one operating system for nightlife. That means it’s the first of its kind to offer ticketing, guest management, promoter commission tracking, POS, payment processing and real-time analytics all live in one platform. Credit: Fourvenues The pitch is straightforward: nightlife venues need more than just a way to sell tickets online. They need software that handles the entire operation, from capacity management to VIP reservations to paying out promoters. Fourvenues says that businesses using its platform see revenue increases above 20%, and they point to a staggering 98% client retention rate as evidence that the model works. Fourvenues has grown 38x in revenue between 2021 and 2025 and has raised $9.2 million from investors including Base10 Partners and FJ Labs, both of which have portfolios that include Figma, Airbnb and Stripe. What sets Fourvenues apart, according to CEO and co-founder Alberto Centeno, is that the founding team came from inside the industry. They worked as general managers, VIP hosts and promoters before building software. Credit: Lucas Gómez “Digitizing ticket sales means nothing if the rest of the operation is still manual,” Centeno said. “Fourvenues exists to help operators work more efficiently, maximize revenue and deliver unforgettable guest experiences that they can actually control. We’re here to elevate how nightlife runs.” The platform includes integrations with Meta and Google for campaign tracking, support for global payment methods and a sales forecasting tool that Fourvenues claims hits an impressive 90% accuracy.
